Singapore Prize 2021 Winners Announced

Singapore Prize will now honor works of literature written in each of Singapore’s four official languages for the first time ever, with poet Marylyn Tan claiming victory with her poetry collection Gaze Back as an attempt at gender and linguistic reclamation. Judges described this work as an unforgettable combination of “lyrical imagery that will linger long in your memory and touch your heart”.

Wang Gungwu won for his novel The Chinese Detective; Wong Koi Tet won with his work of historical fiction; comic artist Sonny Liew won with The Art Of Charlie Chan Hock Chye by way of comic strip The Art Of Charlie Chan Hock Chye; Malay-language writer Suratman Markasan won with The Legend of Saroja by publishing it post-2021; this category previously was eligible under Book but now will receive their own prize! Additionally, SLP introduced a translation category dedicated specifically to works written in non-English translation translated by Singaporean authors published post-2021 with Singapore authors receiving prizes just like Book submissions!

Attracting some of golf’s biggest names despite its lower profile compared to events on the DP World Tour or PGA Tour, LIV Golf League events still draw top players such as Brooks Koepka of DP World Tour or PGA Tour tournaments, such as on Sunday at Singapore Classic 2025 when Brooks won his fourth title of tour earning $4 Million as solo winner edging out Ryder Cup captain Cameron Smith (13-under 275 total) and teammate Marc Leishman (12-under 277) who tied for second (13-under 275 totals).

This year, the SINGAPORE PRIZE will add two new categories – arts and multimedia as well as translation award – bringing its total prizes up to 18. The arts and multimedia category will open to any visual or performing art work that celebrates Singaporean history while the translation award, previously offered under Book category but now as its own prize, honors works of fiction, non-fiction or poetry published from 2022-2023 that were translated from English into Singaporean English by Singaporean creators and published from 2024-2025 that also offered within Book category in previous years. 2024 edition will also include graphic novels/comic works under Book category before moving under Book category itself!

The SINGAPORE PRIZE is an international literary competition which honours books with literary merit in Singapore’s official languages, with its primary aim to foster greater awareness and understanding of Singapore through literature. Judged by an independent panel comprised of literary critics and academics, each winning entry receives publication in anthologies featuring SINGAPORE PRIZE anthologies along with cash awards of S$20,000 from winning entries selected from shortlists containing works that best meet each language category.

Every year, the SINGAPORE PRIZE gives away 97% of its proceeds to charitable organizations in Singapore and around the world, from government and Tote Board contributions, member donations and public contributions – in addition to dispersing S$5 million each year in grants and sponsorships for communities and organisations.
