Hong Kong may be synonymous with shopping or dim sum, but recently its waterways have also made headlines due to contamination from vomit or faeces in some public swimming pools; many also face staff shortages during LCSD workers’ six-week strike.
According to a recent report by Southern Metropolis Daily, pool closures have reached their highest point since 2010. Furthermore, illegal mainland swimmers have increasingly used local pool systems as a way of bypassing more stringent quality controls in their cities of origin.
Hong Kong remains home to some of the world’s most scenic swimming spots despite these challenges, from world’s highest hotel pool to natural infinity pond on a mountainside, we’ve compiled a list of some of Hong Kong’s most stunning pools.
1. Ritz Carlton Hong Kong Pool
This stylish indoor pool, located on the 118th floor of the International Commerce Center, puts you right amongst the clouds. While beautiful by day, this venue really comes to life after dark when lit by LED screens depicting clouds overhead.
2. Tung Chung Swimming Pool
Although this structure may look ordinary at first glance, its design was inspired by nature. The curvilinear lines reminiscent of seashells allow natural sunlight to seep into this indoor pool and enhance ventilation throughout. Furthermore, loungers offer stunning views of Victoria Harbour and Ngong Ping cable car from this pool area.
3. The Kennedy Town Swimming Pool
Built by MTR Corporation Limited and inaugurated in February 2017 on its original location – which had to be demolished to accommodate for the new West Island railway line – MTR Corporation’s stunning new public swimming pool opened its doors for public use in February 2017 at Kennedy Town. Featuring its eye-catching facade that showcases different colors of MTR Corporation Limited logo, people-watching here is also a fantastic opportunity.
4. Hong Kong Swimming Pool Complex
This modern complex in Causeway Bay features both indoor and outdoor pools with stunning views of Victoria Harbour and Hong Kong city skyline. The outdoor pool features waterfalls and whirlpools; while inside, marble columns, water fountains and steamer chairs add elegance. As one of only public pools available to use in Southern District this facility is managed by the Hong Kong Pools Management Association which receives funding from Governing Body.
